Because of this, many families have been farming for several generations. It is important for the current generation of students to learn skills to ensure that the native crops continue to be cultivated.
Selling is also a very important skill because many people rely on markets and local vendors to do their shopping. Although there is a supermarket in my town, food from the market is much more affordable and fresh. On any street in my town, you can see people selling fresh fruits, hot meals or cold drinks right out of their front yards. For many sellers, this is a way to earn money and support their families.
Thanks to projects such as school gardens, many students are learning how to grow and sell fresh produce. After talking with my students, I have learned that many children also learn farming and selling skills from their parents. Students of farming families often help tend the fields and harvest the crops. Kids whose parents are vendors help them at their stall, and sometimes I even see kids running a stall all on their own.
