Growing Veggies and Good Habits

Introduction:

Lettuce, bananas, tomatoes, long beans, eggplants, morning glory flowers and more can be found in my school’s garden. Classes take turns caring for the garden, which teaches students important life skills. Once the vegetables are ready to pick, students in fifth and sixth grade set up a stall outside the school and sell the fresh produce to parents and people passing by. By growing and selling vegetables, students are learning valuable lessons, and they are also raising money for their school.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned how important gardening is to people in my community. Many students in my school have parents who are farmers, and other students have parents who are vendors that sell local products. Learning to grow fruits and vegetables is an important skill that allows people to have access to healthy food. After growing and harvesting crops, learning how to sell products is another important skill in my community.

Why does the community have this need?:

My province is located just below the largest river in Cambodia, which makes the land here ideal for farming. Rice is one of the most common foods in Cambodia, so there are many rice fields just outside of my town. Sugar palm, mangoes, cassava, corn, bananas and most types of vegetables also grow very well here.
