Karneval is a fun and colorful festival in Germany with costumes, parades and music. People celebrate by dressing up, throwing candy and enjoying parties. Karneval is celebrated at the end of winter, bringing joy and excitement before the seasons change. In Mannheim, people cheer Ahoi! as they celebrate together with parades and dancing.
One German tradition that I learned about and participated in was Karneval (Carnival), also called Fasching in different parts of Germany. Karneval is a large festival with unique costumes, parades and cultural food. People dress up in fun costumes and decorate floats that they moved throughout the city, tossing candy to the parade watchers. Most of the floats have a theme, play music and feature people dancing. Larger cities in Germany, like Cologne, have some of the biggest celebrations of the year.
Karneval has been celebrated in Germany for over 500 years. It originally started as a festival before a religious period when people gave up certain foods or treats for 40 days. Before fasting, people celebrated and enjoyed themselves.
