Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

The main language spoken in Tanzania is Kiswahili. It is an easy language to learn. If you have seen "The Lion King," you already know some Kiswahili! "Simba" is the Kiswahili word for "lion" and "Rafiki" is the Kiswahili word for "friend."

What type of money is used here?:

The money here is called the Tanzania shilling, and they use colorful bills that range from 1,000 to 10,000 shillings in value. As compared to the greenish U.S. dollar, shillings are red, purple and blue! One U.S. dollar is worth about 2,300 Tanzanian shillings, so things here are less expensive than I'm used to. A piece of candy, for example, costs about 200 Tanzanian shillings, or nine U.S. cents.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A large bottle of water here costs 1,500 Tanzania shillings, which is about 67 U.S. cents.

What was the best meal this week?:

The best meal I had this week was Chapati (flatbread) with Maragahe, which are beans in a sauce called Pili Pili which is very spicy! It reminded me of the food that we eat back home in America.

What music did I listen to this week?:

This week I listened to a Tanzanian singer named Arikiba. He sings in the local language of Kiswahili and has really fun beats for dancing.
