Something I was really excited to try this week was Boruvkovy Knedliky, which are sweet dumplings with berries inside, and on top is powdered sugar and tvaroh! Tvaroh is like cottage cheese, but it is sweet (a lot better) and used in lots of pastries. Lastly, but probably most important, is Svickova s Knedliky, which is basically the Czech national dish. It is bread dumplings served with beef or turkey with a rich sauce made from blended vegetables on top! The cool thing about it is that the sauce tastes nothing like vegetables. You can find this being cooked in every Czech home. This dish is what I will focus on!
I have listed a lot of foods, but that is because I felt the same thing trying all of them. Every dish feels cozy. A lot of the pastries and meals I mentioned are warm and comforting. When I first tried Svickova s Knedliky, I felt really warm inside. It is a very rich and filling dish that can easily feed a whole family. Throughout my time here, I have realized that a way for many people to show their love is by cooking. Svickova definitely has that feel, and it is a dish even picky eaters will like.
Svickova s Knedliky is started the night before it is eaten. The first thing that is done is the Svickova. All of the root vegetables are boiled in a large pot and then left to cool overnight. The next day, the boiled vegetables are blended to make the sauce. Next, the meat is cooked with broth, some vegetables and seasoning in a dish, which is then put into the oven. It is slowly cooked until the meat is tender.
