However, for around 400 years, Fasnet celebrations were banned in Tübingen due to their anti-religious sentiments that favored "Pagan mischief." In 1996, two local organizations were responsible for bringing the tradition back and now rotate responsibility for the festival every other year. Now it is one of the many celebrations that bring people together in the cold winter months and fosters community in various villages around Baden-Württemberg!
Karneval in Germany is very much connected to the localities and their surroundings, even taking on different names depending on the region. For example, while cities and villages along the Rhine River use the term Karneval to describe the holiday, in Bavaria it's often referred to as Fasching, and Fastnacht in Southwest Germany. The various Carnival themes in different villages ("witches" in Tübingen or "clowns" in Cologne) also derive from local mythologies making each regional Karneval festival a unique experience!
