When I arrived in Turkey in September, I was terrified. I did not know the language, I did not have any friends, and I was not sure if I could adapt to a completely new way of life. Since then, I have changed in so many ways. I have learned to slow down, to listen before responding and to embrace uncertainty. Along the way, I have built lasting friendships with both my fellow Fulbrighters and people here in the local community.
I love participating in the Reach the World program because it has pushed me to reflect more deeply on my experiences and share them with such a bright and curious group of students. It reminds me how much I am learning every day!
Since my last update, I had the opportunity to travel to Cappadocia, which is only four hours from Sivas. Cappadocia has a rich history. It was once home to large Christian communities who hid from Roman persecution in underground cities and cave dwellings. Today, you can still see incredible churches carved into the hills. The region is also famous for its hot air balloons that fill the sky at sunrise. While I was there, I rode a horse, tried traditional foods and watched the balloons drift across the landscape. It was unforgettable.
