So far, I've attended two events in Berlin by Afro artists/DJs, and looked into which Black collectives move the needle in the city. The first was an Obongjayar concert, a Nigerian artist based in the UK. The second was an Amapiano (South African African House genre) birthday event hosted by a Russian born, Berlin resident.
Most of the attendees at both events either walked or took public transportation. Berlin is a huge city with an elaborate network of trains, subways, trams and buses to get around any time of day. Most people don't need a car and go to their favorite events using public transportation. Music travels as naturally and organically as the preferred modes of transportation.
The city seems to carry an innate curiosity for experimental music. I can say for sure that with Obongjayar (whose music is not easily categorized by genre) the heart of Berlin holds a special place for his artistic creativity and individuality.
