This week, I traveled to work at the municipality on Monday and Wednesday. To get there, I hike about three miles each way. The hike down is much easier, but coming back up the mountain definitely makes me feel out of breath!
On Friday, I started traveling for a training in Cajamarca. First, I went down the mountain to the closest big city, Caraz, which takes about two hours. From there, I took a seven-hour overnight bus to Trujillo. Then I took another overnight bus from Trujillo to Cajamarca, which takes about six and a half hours. And yes—I’ll have to do the whole trip in reverse to get home!
From North Carolina to Peru, I travelled close to 3,000 miles to my new home. About once to twice a month I travel to Caraz, Huaraz or Lima for medical appointments, a hot shower, to buy supplies I might need for work or myself, or even just to meet other friends.
The travel time really depends on where I’m going. It takes about two hours to get to Caraz, four hours to reach Huaraz, and around twelve hours to make it all the way to Lima. Living here has definitely changed how I think about distance and travel time!
