In Peru, there are 48 officially recognized languages. The three most common are Spanish, Quechua and Aymara. In my community, both Spanish and Quechua are spoken every day.
I’ve noticed that younger people mostly speak Spanish, while many older adults speak primarily Quechua. Frequently conversations switch back and forth between the two languages, which is really interesting to hear. At the local school, students learn Spanish, Quechua and even English! It’s amazing to see how language is such an important part of daily life and culture here.
The type of money use here is called soles! One U.S dollar is equivalent to approximately 3.35 soles.
A bottle of water costs around 1-3 soles depending on brand and whether or not it is refrigerated.
