The Christmas season has begun in Germany! Christmas has been celebrated throughout the country for a very long time, as Germany historically was Catholic and then mostly converted to Protestantism a few hundred years ago. I will take you on an adventure to the Weihnachtsmarkt, or Christmas Market, which are popular and quite famous throughout the country.
Christmas markets have been a tradition in the weeks leading up to the holiday in almost every major town and city for hundreds of years. At these markets, there are many traditional stalls and huts that sell classic food and drinks of the season. You can also find stalls with knick-knacks and goodies for gifts and decorations. Common foods include Bratwurst, a sausage in a small bun, Heiße Maronen, hot roasted chestnuts, and french fries! Common drinks include hot chocolate or Kinderpunsch, or “kid’s punch”. Christmas markets usually have specially designed mugs that your drink will come in that you can choose to keep or return and get a bit of money back. Marburg has two Christmas markets. The Weihnachtsmarkt is held by the St. Elizabeth church and the Adventsmarkt is held in the center of the old city in the market square. It has been a lot of fun after research or classes to meet up with my friends and head to the market!
