Before arriving to the Czech Republic, my exposure to Czech food was very limited! This meant that everything I have tried has been new. When I asked my coworkers what I should try first, they all suggested Knedlíky, a traditional Czech dumpling that is one of the most popular dishes across the country. I've had dumplings before, both in Asian cuisine and in a personal favorite dish, chicken and dumpling soup, but Knedlíky are truly unlike anything I've tried before and were an unexpected surprise. Since living in the Czech Republic, they have become a staple in my diet.
Knedlíky - a traditional Czech dumpling!
When my coworker Katka, dished up my plate of Plněné papriky s rajskou omáčkou (Stuffed Peppers with Tomato Sauce) with 4 slices of Knedlíky on the side, I was quite surprised. These dumplings didn't look like the dumplings that I was used to. They weren't fluffy and light, or stuffed with any filling, instead these dumplings looked like a strange kind of bread. I was a bit nervous to take my first bite, but when I did I was pleasantly surprised.
