There are three different kinds: the bread dumpling (as I described), the potato dumpling (more heavy than bread dumplings and oftentimes served as a main course), and the fruit dumpling (stuffed with fruits and jams - even though it sounds like a dessert, it can be a main course as well!). Knedlíky became popular because of their simplicity. Especially during war times and when they were part of the Soviet Union, the Czech people had to learn how to prepare food with few inexpensive ingredients. Because they require only a few simple ingredients and are very heavy and filling, Knedlíky became a staple Czech food both on the battlefield and in the homes of Czech people. Today, people eat and enjoy Knedlíky not out of necessity, but out of tradition and enjoyment. You can find them everywhere from a fancy restaurant in a big city like Prague, to a cafeteria in a small town like Bruntál, which shows just how much food can connect us!
