Cooking Nem Rán

Introduction:

Xin chào, or "hello" in Vietnamese! My name is Victoria, and I am currently teaching English in Việt Nam. I am from Massachusetts, USA. I have been living in Việt Nam for four months. I live in a small community outside of Hà Noi, the capital city of Việt Nam. I am so excited to share my journey with all of you and to learn about your lives and school in Colombia!

What food did I try?:

I tried nem rán, a traditional Vietnamese food often called “spring rolls” in English. Nem rán is made by wrapping vegetables, noodles and either pork or shrimp in rice paper wrappers. Nem rán is traditionally eaten to celebrate the Lunar New Year, the biggest holoiday in Việt Nam, but it is popular all year round! Because nem rán is traditionally eaten during celebrations, it represents family and good luck.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

This dish is very important to the culture of Việt Nam, so I was excited to try both cooking and eating it. Nem rán is delicious! The flavors of the different vegetables, noodles and pork all mix together to make a very good taste. Even better than the meal itself is the company you share it with! I was able to cook and eat my nem rán with a large group of friends and other teachers.
