Throughout my time here, I am teaching chemistry and English at a secondary school, working in healthcare at a local hospital, and coaching tennis to youth ages 8-18 at a nonprofit tennis academy. I have also been working on starting the first youth baseball team in my town and learning bits and pieces of the local language. Monday through Wednesday, I am at the school, as those are the days the students have my classes. Thursday through Saturday I spend at a local hospital working with the other nurses as a medical assistant, and soon at the Dzaleka Refugee Camp working in the healthcare centers. In the afternoons are when I coach tennis on a makeshift court in the parking lot of the country's main football (soccer) stadium. We have to get creative with the trainings, as we will often have around 40 students all on one court. Then on Sundays I go to church and spend time with the youth or other families.
There are so many things to learn and it is such a different world than Kaysville, Utah. As you begin to experience the different places in the world around you, you start to understand what culture is and how the experiences you have, as well as your environment, affect your perspective and view on life and everything around you. I think this is something you will come to find true as we go through the next few months together! When I was young, this was my dream, and now I get to finally live it! I am so excited for you to live it with me and together we can experience the wonders of Malawi, Africa! Anyways, that's enough for one week. Enjoy the pictures and see you next week! Teonana!
