Come With Me on an Adventure in Malawi, Africa!

Anyways, back to the introduction. I am 24 years old and from Kaysville, Utah (Go Darts!). After high school at Davis, I served a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ in Peru. It was such an amazing experience and was where I found a passion for connecting with people from all different backgrounds and cultures. Afterwards, I went to BYU where I studied Neuroscience (everything to do with the brain and how it works). I loved it; the brain is so fascinating! After graduating from BYU, I started preparing for this foreign exchange program in Malawi called Fulbright. I will be in Malawi for almost a year, from September 2024 to June 2025, after which I hope to begin medical school and become a doctor involved in global health and education.

I have now been here for four months and am loving every second. I wish you could be here and see with your own eyes just how different a world it is here, 10,000 miles away from Kaysville. I specifically remember arriving at the airport in Malawi, which consisted of a runway and a single building, likely smaller than your school, and driving through the countryside on the way into town. On each side of the road you found several mud and straw homes, some being lived in and others empty from having broken down. The roads were filled with people walking home from work and carrying water or food home from the market. Some people take a taxi, which consists of a pedal bike with a small seat on the back for a passenger to sit. People were hurrying to their homes as few have electricity and the sun sets at 6pm. This means when the sun goes down, your day comes to an end until the sun brings light again in the early morning.
