While you may not be shocked that German is the official language of Germany, since the late 1940s most people have learned to speak English as a second language.

Since Europe's economic reform in 1999, the currency in Germany has been the euro (€).

How much does a bottle of water cost?:
  • €2 from a vending machine, if the water is "sprudelnd" or fizzy.
  • €1.75 from a vending machine, if the water is "medium" or partly fizzy.
  • €1.50 from a vending machine, if the water is "still" or normal.
What was the best meal this week?:

Wienerschnitzel with Pommesfrites (that's the European version of French fries) and a dark Hefeweizen beer. The drinking age in Germany is 16.

Wagner's Tannhäuser overture - a perfect piece for mountain hiking.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

Yesterday Jenny and I rode the train to Bregenz, Austria.  This city sits at the southernmost base of the Bodensee and is nestled in the Austrian Alps.
