For example, there is a Nigerian restaurant that I frequent that cooks okra soup just like my dad does, and there's a bakery down the street that sells cinnamon sugar doughnuts for times when I’m missing fall pumpkin patches and cider back home. These little things have made Cape Town feel like a home away from home, and I have loved finding my own spaces here.
I’ll never forget my first hike up Table Mountain and how it felt to reach the top, or when all my friends and I had a karaoke night and laughed until our voices were gone. I will never forget all of the art either, from beautiful choral voices to drum circles, from 3-D art pieces to comedy shows. I have also loved how moments as simple as midnight conversations with friends over a braai (South African barbecue) have become treasured memories as well.
So.... we’ve gone on a safari together, spotted springboks, learned about First Thursdays, traveled around Cape Town and explored some of the most beautiful mountains. It has been so fun to take all of you along on this journey with me, and I hope you’ve had fun, too! Even if you’re not traveling right now, I want you to think about where you’d want to go, what you’d like to experience, and how you can explore your own interests more deeply. Adventure is everywhere! For me, it was an adventure to South Africa, but my next one is starting soon, working at my local smoothie shop during winter break!
I encourage you to think about what adventure you’re currently exploring. What are you curious about, and how can you dive deeper into that topic or idea? The sky really is the limit! Think about how math might help you understand it, or about all the different parts that make up your interest.
