Everywhere you go and everything you do probably causes some sort of waste. From driving in a car to unwrapping your favorite pack of snacks, some pollution is created. Factories that create cars and snacks also create pollution. This waste then goes into the air, and on to the ground, becoming part of the air we breathe and land we walk on. It is not our individual fault that this waste is created, but we can do some things to be less wasteful overall.
In Italy, and in especially in Pavia, there is a noticeable fogginess in the air created by air pollution. The air is okay to breathe, but when traveling to different cities, I am able to notice how the air feels more fresh and more clean in my lungs and mouth. Having polluted air is okay if your lungs are working well, but if you have lung problems or other health concerns, having polluted air can make it harder to breathe and can make you more sick.
The community has a need for clean air primarily becuase of the number of factories that are in the north of Italy. The northern region has historically been a center for producing and manufacturing many different goods, and all of these factories emit pollution into the air. Also, the northern area is located in a valley called the Po Valley.
