Nature News

I write about some of the different animals that I have seen in my time in Cape Town here in my blog as well.

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

This week, I saw the stars moving! Well, not exactly—that’s just what I thought at first. It turns out I was watching the Draconid meteor shower! The Draconid meteor shower is a special event that happens every October when Earth flies through a trail of tiny pieces left behind by a comet called 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. When these tiny pieces hit Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up and make bright streaks of light across the sky. They look just like shooting stars— or, to me, like moving stars!

Other Nature News from this week:

South Africa is making big moves towards becoming a more sustainable country! In cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg (two of South Africa’s three capitals), there are many new projects to help people recycle, compost and take care of waste properly. They’re also finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials to create a more circular economy. You can picture a circle if this helps! This system ensures that resources and waste are used again and again intead of just being thrown away.

Math moment: If every person in a neighborhood recycled 2 plastic bottles each day, how many bottles would that be after a week if 100 people lived there?
