Moleweni! Welcome to my Cape Town Journey!

Now, how did I get to Cape Town? I think that if I talk about all of the reasons that I am here, we might be here all day, all night, and maybe for the next month, so I'll tell you just a few. First, I knew I wanted to study abroad in an African country. Africa is full of culture, food, nature and history. I also love biology, so I wanted to see the land and animals here. South Africa has mountains, deserts, beaches and even snow! Plus, as a sociology student, I wanted to see how people from many different cultures live together.

One fun difference between the United States and other countries is measurement. In the U.S., we use miles, but here in South Africa, people use kilometers, as a part of the metric system. That changes the way I think about distances. If one mile is about 1.6 kilometers, about how many miles was my six kilometer hike?

Even though I’m far away from home, I can use the same math to understand my world. Although we might use different ways to measure, we can still understand the same distance— whether you’re in Michigan, Minnesota, Cape Town, or Nebraska!

I’m so excited about this journey. The best part? You can imagine walking the trails, spotting animals and exploring right along with me.

Let’s go!
