Hallo! My name is Chi Chi Okezie, and I live about thirty minutes outside of Detroit, Michigan, in a small town named West Bloomfield. If you use your hand to make a mitten shape (the shape of Michigan), I am from an area really close to where your thumb and the rest of your fingers meet. The town I grew up in was really small. Additionally, my name and cultural background is rooted in Nigeria, where I was born and where my family is from.
When it was time for college, I wanted to go somewhere a little bigger than my town, but not too big, so I chose Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. At Macalester, I study statistics, a kind of math where we use numbers to learn things, and sociology, which is learning about how people live together.
It is typical that a student at Macalester College studies abroad during their third year, and while I thought this would not be possible for me, through the Gilman Scholarship, I.E.S. Abroad, and my college, we have made this dream a reality. I mean, I am here, in South Africa, and I’ve got the pictures to prove it! It's amazing!
