Care for Orphans

Introduction:

The Can Tho Youth Empowerment Project (CTYEP) has given me the special opportunity to volunteer with about a dozen orphans twice a month. Loving and supporting orphans is an important community initiative that should never be neglected. I've learned a lot about perseverance from the kids at the orphanage, as well as the adults who have dedicated their lives to orphans.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about the need to support and care for orphans in the Can Tho community. I volunteer at an orphanage twice a month with a program called the Can Tho Youth Empowerment Project (CTYEP). We organize game nights, movie nights and arts and crafts projects with the kids. There are about twelve kids who live at the orphanage, while several more attend our special events.

Why does the community have this need?:

The unfortunate reality is that every community has orphans who are dealt a difficult hand for one reason or another. Vietnam is no exception to the rule. Orphans are children whose parents have passed away, given up their children or are unknown. The love and affection of nurturing parents for their children is one of life's greatest gifts. In the absence of biological parents, orphans can be adopted or cared for at an orphanage. Loving caretakers and mentors can help fill the void that orphans experience.
