Snail Mail

Introduction:

There are thousands of species of snails. I won't pretend to be a snail expert, but I've definitely become more interested in these curious creatures during my stay in Vietnam. Snails are an important part of the environment here!

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The snails here are large and slimy, with a spiral shell for protection. Their eyes are attached to a long pair of tentacles! Snails are slow-moving creatures that never seem to be in a rush.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I felt curious and surprised when I first saw the snails in my front yard. I had no idea that snails grow to be this big!

Where does it live?:

The snails that I have seen live in my front yard. They are important members of the neighborhood community, though we don't see each other very often. Snails normally emerge from the swamp during heavy rains.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Snails in Vietnam prefer to live in moist climates with plenty of nutrients. They typically eat plants, fungi and algae. Gardens and swampy areas are ideal snail habitats. Although these tropical snails prefer moist environments, they avoid standing water and escape from the swamp during big rainstorms. Snails are skilled at using their unique environment to survive.
