From the vibrant protea flower, South Africa's national flower, to the peculiar vegetation found nowhere else on Earth, it's like walking through a living encyclopedia of plant life. Exploring these gardens allows for a chance to appreciate the unique biodiversity that makes Cape Town so special.
Now, let's talk about the oceans. Cape Town is blessed with two of them, and they play a huge role in the community's life. Locals love heading to the beaches for everything from surfing to picnics. There's something magical about the rhythm of the waves and the salty breeze that brings people together. You can see families, friends and even students like me taking a break from their books to catch some sun and sea--I think I’ve visited the beach every weekend that I’ve been here so far!
Speaking of breaks, the food here is another way the community connects with its environment. Have you ever heard of biltong (a cured meat) or koesisters (a donut-like pastry with coconut on top)? These are traditional South African dishes that are not just delicious, but also tell a story about the culture and history of the place. Cape Town's markets are filled with fresh produce harvested from the Philippi Horticultural Area--one of the only agricultural areas located within existing neighborhoods of a city within South Africa--and the local cuisine is a celebration of the region's diverse influences.
Being in Cape Town has been incredible, and I’ve been able to see where the community and the environment are intertwined. The mountains, oceans and city life all come together to create a vibrant culture that not only enriches my academics but also reminds me to appreciate the world around us.
