Mangroves: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I also have been helping with a project on an insect called Coccotrypes rhizophorae. This insect is a major problem for mangroves across the coast of Ecuador. It makes its way into the plant and lays eggs to grow a huge family within the mangrove plants. This insect is really harmful to the mangroves. It is important to study so that we can try to find a solution to the problem.

The Ugly:

I have also had time to help with another project of my research group: growing mangrove plants for reforestation. However, nobody had taken care of these plants for a long time, so they were clearly sick and infested with fungi and insects. I was in charge of throwing away dead plants and cleaning those that were living. I really believe in the importance of working on conservation projects in addition to research, so I was happy to help. However, I had an unfortunate allergic reaction to something on the unhealthy plants. Next time I will have to work on a different project.

Other than research, what have I been up to? Last weekend, I traveled to the beach with my friends. It was super fun! Unlike in the United States, Guayaquil is just beginning to get hotter now. I spent a lot of time at the gym, hanging out with my host family, and reading. I have also been able to explore the city Guayaquil more. I especially like going to concerts with my friends to learn more about the music in Ecuador.

Researching and living here is always full of surprises and learning opportunities. I love traveling and living in Ecuador, but I definitely miss my friends and family back home. I make sure to call my parents, sister, and friends very often.
