Building Back after Floods - The Central Flood Commission

Why does the community have this need?:

Floods have always been common in this part of the country as there are many rivers created by runoff from the mountains. But climate change has been increasing the number of floods and how intense they are. Many areas of the Czech Republic are getting much more rain than normal, and the snow is melting much faster. This means that the rivers are overflowing, causing floods.

Because floods are becoming more common, many communities need help to figure out how they can better prepare for these events and how they can change their cities to make the effects less severe. If they don't respond and get help, people will continue to rebuild but may lose their homes and livelihoods every couple of years.

Is this need being met? How?:

Though it's impossible to completely eliminate floods, the Central Flood Commission and local volunteers are doing a great job at cleaning up and repairing damage from last year's floods. When you travel to the places that were under several feet of water last year, you couldn't even tell that anything happened anymore. They have done a great job repairing the outside of buildings and the streets so that tourists can continue to visit the cities.

However, many families and small businesses haven't gotten as much support and are struggling to rebuild their homes. Even some schools still have lots of problems with electricity, mold and water damage. These people still need support and are hoping that the government will continue to assist them.
