In the Czech Republic, severe weather isn't a huge problem. Their country is landlocked, meaning it doesn't border any major bodies of water, so hurricanes aren't an issue and tornadoes aren't very common. But the country, and especially the region I live in, Moravia-Silesia, has one big problem: floods. Therefore, a special group has been created by the government that helps communities prepare for and respond to floods. The Central Flood Commission has a very important job and helps communities recover after these disasters.
Many of my students live in nearby towns and villages, and when learning about this places, I learned that last year there were huge floods where many of the towns were destroyed and people lost their homes. Since last year, the towns have been working very hard to recover from the damage and prepare for future events. The floods damaged buildings and even impacted transportation. For almost a year, the train between Bruntal and the nearby city of Krnov was out, so people had to rely on buses or cars to get from one place to another. Many of these towns and villages are very small and don't have a lot of money or resources to build back from the floods so they are relying on help from the government and the Central Flood Commission.
