Healthcare in Finland

Why does the community have this need?:

Thankfully, today, few people in Finland do not have good access to healthcare, although there are a few exceptions, such as migrant minorities and the Sámi people. However, think about this: if the universe tends towards disorder or randomness, and what we know about the human body is true (that nobody lives forever, yet!), is it enough to merely maintain the health of the people who are alive in society right now? Probably not. Healthy people today might get sick tomorrow. New babies are born every moment. Mutations and recombinations change what health challenges we face every day, as do environmental changes. I think this is what Finland does best: they are not content with the status quo - a large portion of their efforts in healthcare go to planning for the future and catching deadly trends, providing support for the most vulnerable way in advance, before these issues costs lives.

Is this need being met? How?:

I am proud to be a part of the research teams at Tampere University and THL (National Institute for Health and Welfare), but thankfully we are not the only people looking at what it means to be healthy. Just like you can learn something from everyone, we can all learn something from every country, even places that are very different than our homes. What similarities that we have in common may be more important than what separates or divides us, and they may just end up saving lives, too, if we take a moment to acknowledge them.
