Rome is a very diverse city, but Italian is the main language. English is the second most common one, especially around restaurants and shops. Whenever you walk into a store, it’s pretty customary to say “ciao” or “buongiorno,” which means hello or good morning. People appreciate it when you try to speak Italian, even if it’s just a few words.
Italy uses the euro. Thankfully, a lot of places take Apple Pay, which makes things easy because it automatically converts from American Dollars.
Usually about one euro, maybe less at a grocery store.
The best meal I had this week was carbonara. It’s a Roman pasta dish made with eggs, cheese, pancetta and pepper, and it’s creamy without using any cream. It sounds simple, but when it’s made right, it’s perfect. And of course, I can’t skip gelato. I’m a huge fan of gelato, and it has basically become an almost definitive part of my routine when I go out to eat.
