Yes, wheat (and winter wheat) is an essential crop in Germany. Almost a quarter of the agriculture I wrote about in my agriculture article is used to grow wheat! Winter wheat is a variety of wheat which can grow closer to the winter, and is less susceptible to cold. This variety is important globally, but almost all of German wheat is winter wheat, maybe because of Germany’s rather unpredictable frosts. I’ve noticed that they prefer to use whole-grain flour and maybe this is what contributes to the ‘darkness’ of their breads.
