Today I’m sad, because I’m writing a farewell to you all, but I’m happy to be able to look back on our time together with pride. It has been a wild ride, hasn’t it? We’ve learned about German culture, plant science, and German plant science :) What was your favorite article? I think I liked writing the logbook about everyday life in Germany the most, because I liked getting to talk about a wide range of things in one article. So often plants and food and culture are wrongfully separated, when in reality, they all coexist. I hope you’ve seen through my writing just how interconnected community, food, and plants really are. Halloween is one example, where we all cooked pumpkin soup and carved pumpkins together. Traditional bread made with German wheat is another, and so are community gardens, and Christmas markets, and I could go on and on…

Recently, my family visited me from America. We had some fun walking around Berlin and I started to see all the things I had made articles about in a new light. For instance, we went to the Brandenburg gate, when it wasn’t lit up with the Festival of Lights. They visited my work, and asked about the Mistletoe balls in the trees, which are perfectly visible now that the trees have lost all their leaves.
