The Big Five

Introduction:

Uganda has many types of animals, from goats, chickens and cows, to different types of birds that attract many tourists. There is one group of animals that is hard to find, making it very special to see all five. This group is called the Big Five, and it includes the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. These animals were named the Big Five by European colonists who hunted animals in Africa. Colonists named them the Big Five because they felt that these five animals were hard to track down and dangerous to come into contact with.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The lion is usually tan or light brown, allowing it to blend into savanna grass. The male lion has a mane, or hair, around its face. The female lion does not. The leopard is also lightly colored, like the lion, but has unique spots. These spots are called rosettes because they are shaped like roses. The elephant and rhinoceros are both dark gray. The elephant has tusks near its mouth, and the rhinoceros has horns on top of its nose. The buffalo also has horns on the top of its head, but they are darker in color.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I went on my first safari in Uganda at the end of 2024. I saw many elephants and buffalo, since these are the easiest animals to see from The Big Five. We were lucky enough to spot some lions, but they were far away.
