One of the biggest motivating factors in my decision to come to Singapore was their reputation for great food. I, like most of us, love to eat. Even with my high expectations for the food, I was still pleasantly surprised. It feels like every other day I try a new dish that is an automatic contender for the best thing I've ever eaten. In addition, it's a lot cheaper (for the most part) than the food in America that I'm used to. There's also an amazing culture around food here in Singapore, as well as greater Southeast Asia.
No Singaporean field note about food would be proper if it weren't about the classic kaya butter toast set. Kaya is a sweet coconut jam made from coconut milk, eggs, sugar, and pandan leaves. It's all the rage here, and for good reason. The classic set comes with two pieces of toast with kaya and butter in between, two soft boiled eggs and kopi (coffee). Is it customary to add a few drops of a dark soy sauce and some ground white pepper to the eggs. In one of the dining halls at the National University of Singapore, they have a cheap breakfast set from 7-10:30am for only 2.50 SGD! For reference, that's right around $2 in the U.S.
