Behind the Door: Discovering a Moroccan Riad

Instead of looking across the street from an upstairs balcony, you might look down into your own courtyard.

If you could design your own riad, what would you put in the courtyard? A fountain? Trees? Flowers? A place to eat? Maybe somewhere to read or play?

That is part of what makes traveling by bicycle so interesting. I never know exactly what I am going to find at the end of the day. Sometimes it is a famous landmark. Sometimes it is an unexpected view along the road. Traveling slowly also gives me opportunities to notice how people live. Houses, markets, food, streets, and even the places where I sleep can teach me something about a country. My night in Larache wasn't just a place to rest before getting back on my bicycle. It became another part of the adventure.

And sometimes, all you have to do is open an old door.
