Taiwanese Student Perspectives

I (Ona) also asked my students how they greet each other and got a mix of actual langauge and Gen-Alpha internet slang including, but not limited to, 6-7 and 哈哈哈 (ha ha ha).

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some common English names include Yoyo, Una, Jim, Eason, Amy, Jenny, Ken and Anna.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

Students study the same subjects as American students such as science, social studies, English, PE, art and math. They also study Chinese and Taiwanese language, and sometimes will take additional language courses in the language they speak at home, such as Vietnamese or Tsou. Students' favorite subjects are usually PE or art, but also English, Chinese, social studies/history, science and music.

What is your homework like?:

We (the students) get the most homework from our science teacher. Our math teacher is also our Chinese teacher so she will usually give us Chinese and math homework. We sometimes get homework on the weekends but finish it on Friday. For Chinese homework, we have to remember old Chinese poems. If we don't have homework on the weekends, we like to sleep, watch TV or Youtube and ride our bikes.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

Student 1: I stay at school until 6pm, usually doing homework from 4-6pm. I like to play volleyball but don't watch sports. Instead, I enjoy playing Roblox or reading books.

Student 2: After school, I have cram school. On Mondays and Fridays, I have cram school until 8:30 pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have cram school until 7:30 pm.
