Taiwanese Student Perspectives

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Student 1: I go to school and go home by scooter (a small motorcycle). My mom picks me up. Sometimes my brother picks me up too. Some days it's my mom, my brother and me on the scooter.

Student 2: I go to school and go home by scooter. My mom picks up me and my brother together. It is not scary to have all of us on the scooter. But one time my brother had a lot of stuff after his taekwondo class. So his stuff went in the front, then it was my mom, then my brother, and then me on the back, and that was scary.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Student 1: We eat lunch in our home room. Today, we had rice, pork and vegetables. We also had sweet soup with grass jelly.

Student 2: For breakfast, I had clam soup. My mom made it, and I like it. My favorite food is cheese. I like to eat cheese with toast and pasta.

Student 3: For breakfast, I had a banana. I don't have a favorite food. There is a dish in Taiwan that I like. It's soup with noodles, shrimp and other meat. In Taiwan, we eat it for breakfast when it's cold.

Student 4: I eat lunch in my classroom, and my favorite food is rice.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Mandarin, Taiwanese and English are the primary languages spoken at school. Some students will also speak their own languages, such as Indigenous languages like Tsou, or Vietnamese, Thai or Indonesian. To say "hello" in Mandarin, we say “妳好” or nî hâo. In Taiwanese, we say lí hó.
