Appreciating Differences

Living and learning in an environment unlike my own has allowed me to gain an understanding of other peoples; it has also cultivated in me a greater appreciation for my culture and education back home.

Studying abroad was a step out of my comfort zone, on to Spanish soil and into the beautiful unfamiliarity of life in a new culture, among new peoples. With every memory made comes a lesson to learn; every adventure has a story to tell. These will become the stories I pass down, the lessons I teach others and the memories intertwined in every conversation I have.

Although it can be overwhelming at times, the challenges I’ve overcome while being here have helped me become a more mature and developed person. While abroad, I’ve discovered that I can often thrive in new and unexpected circumstances. Plus, I’ve boosted my communication skills with others by speaking a new language— which has helped me further improve my own self-confidence.

Being in Valencia has allowed me to realize the importance of seeing life from perspectives different than those of people in the United States. This study abroad experience is providing me with the foundation and knowledge needed to communicate with employees of different backgrounds, allowing for a more diverse workplace. Living and studying in Spain is broadening my college education, opening doors for more intentional conversations, making me a more competitive applicant in the professional world and, ultimately, cultivating me to be a more versatile and compassionate person.
