Appreciating Differences

Location:
Valencia, Spain
Journal Entry:

I didn't my own opinions about the world until I moved to college. Growing up in a small town, I never experienced cultures or people that were different from my own. My parents’ ideologies were my own, because they were all I’d ever known. I wouldn’t say I was closed off to trying new things or new experiences; I simply never developed my own ideas.

Living in Spain these past few months has opened my eyes to many new experiences and lessons. I am trying many strange foods, exploring various cities on my own, and stumbling over my words while trying to speak a new language. I am calling this place home for four months; therefore, I want to get to know the streets, the restaurants, the campus, and the people— the same way that I know my home in America. I am learning the favorite spots of locals that are off the beaten path and navigating around the city without the help of GPS. I'm privileged to experience the nature, the culture, the everyday way of life and the language, all of which are so very different than my own.

There’s nothing quite like living on your own in a foreign country. I’ve discovered more about myself in these past few months than in my other 19 years combined. This journey has been more than just spending a few days in another country. When you choose to study abroad, you’re committing to months of unfamiliarity.
