A World of Expatriates

Introduction:

Have you ever heard of the word expatriate? An expatriate is a person who lives outside of their native country. When thinking of communities, a community of expatriates is something not common but it is becoming more and more prevalent due to globalization. A globalized world means that there will be a larger mix of people and cultures in big cities.

What community need did I learn about?:

Large cities usually welcome people from all over the world. Having people from all over the world in big cities is helpful because there are a lot of jobs in big cities. With so many people moving to huge international cities, expatriates are needing more than just an apartment to sleep in. I learned about the needs of expatriates through many sources in Madrid. Most sources are personal stories from expatriates themselves. The expatriates that populate cities usually have left their countries due to natural disasters and political turmoil. The others that I have met are students and other business people. This community is lacking support as they transition into the Spanish culture.

Why does the community have this need?:

This city has more than three million people. A large percentage of these people are not native to Madrid. Transitioning into any culture requires overcoming many challenges including language, lifestyle, traditions, customs and even racism.
