I’m writing this to you halfway through my study abroad program. There is still so much to explore and learn in this place.

I will mention this again because it is crucial to understanding Spanish culture: life here is more tranquil in comparison to the United States. By this, I mean - people here are less consumed by work and pay more attention to developing strong relationships with people. Many stores even close between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM due to Spanish tradition. This tradition is known as ‘siesta’ which translates to nap time. This doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone goes to sleep during that time; however, people do take long breaks. The emphasis is placed on the idea of taking a step back and enjoying a cup of coffee.

Additionally, I have noticed that good customer service depends on the person serving you. Unlike the United States, the customer here is not always right. That is a major difference between the United States and Spain. I have been scolded by waiters for not finishing my whole meal because they believe in the idea of finishing what you order. It’s just a different way of thinking.

I highlight these small things because it those makes this country so different from other countries.

A few important things I would like each one of you to take away from my journey and articles:
