Australia's Environment

In the rainforest, of course there is more rain, but there are also many different trees. The trees in the rainforest have very big leaves and are quite tall, while in Sydney a lot of the trees look more like palm trees. Since Sydney is a city, there are fewer trees than the countryside.

Do you know what the opposite of a rainforest is? The answer is a desert! The majority of Australia is like a desert. The inner part of Australia is called the "Outback." In the Outback, it is typically dry, with very little rain and very warm temperatures.

Australia is a huge continent with many different weather conditions as we can see from these examples.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The coastal areas of Australia are where almost all of the people live. The coast is the part of the land that is near the ocean, so for Australia the whole outer part of the continent is where people live. In comparision to the whole continent, the coastal areas of Australia are quite small with the rest of the country being the Outback. The coast helps people live here because the weather conditions are usually comfortable. This means that the temperatures are not too hot, and they usually have rain. The Outback is a difficult environment to live in because it is very dry and very hot in the summer. Near the coast, there are a lot of people who fish, so seafood is quite popular in Australia.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

I have talked about how hot some parts of Australia are, especially the Outback. Since it is so hot, not many fruits and vegetables grow in this area. In other words, the biggest part of Australia is not used as farmland.
