Today, hundreds of thousands of tourists come to Luxembourg each year to see the Grund, the sunken part of the city located on the river bank, and the Casemates du Bock, which is the network of defense tunnels carved into the old fortified walls of the city.
Other beautiful places in Luxembourg City are the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Grand-Ducal Palace, both located in the Ville Haute (city center). The Notre Dame Cathedral was built in 1613, and to this day remains the only cathedral in Luxembourg. It is also the final resting place for several of the Grand Dukes and Duchesses, who are the royal family members of Luxembourg.
The Grand-Ducal Palace is the official residence of the Grand Duke, the monarch of Luxembourg! Although the Grand Duke does not "live" there, it is where he performs all official work and duties such as welcoming foreign presidents and monarchs, hosting meetings and receptions with elected officials and hosting nationwide ceremonies. Fun fact: you can tell if the Grand Duke is present at the palace if there is an armed guard in front of the palace door!
Overall, the architecture of Luxembourg contains fascinating history, both medieval and contemporary! Walking through the city knowing that there are over 1000 years of history beneath my feet always feels so surreal to me, and it makes me appreciate this city and country even more!
