Introduction:

What makes this environment special or different?:

Valparaíso lies next to the ocean; in fact, it was built to take advantage of this location. Even today, there are many shipments of clothing, food and other resources that arrive here by boat.  The inhabitants here depend on the port day to day.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The port in Valparaíso creates jobs for the people that live here. For example, many people work to unload and load shipments that come to Chile from other countries, work as fishermen or work the large pulleys on the docks. Others bring tourists out on boat tours and recount the rich history of the city. These are just some of the many jobs that the port provides for the people of Valparaíso.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Valparaiso is a port, but it has steep hills just inland from the coast. As the city has grown, people have built further back into these hills.  People face the challenge of going up the tall hills in Valparaiso. Some homes are found in difficult locations very high up on the hills.
