Valparaiso as a Port City

Some families live in homes that do not have furniculares (outdoor elevators) that reach them, and they need to walk for very long distances uphill to get home. This provides an environmental challenge for the local people. Can you imagine bringing your groceries home up a steep hill without a way to drive to your door?

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

However, people have adapted to the environment in the sense that they have built large staircases throughout the neighborhoods. These outdoor staircases allow for the people to have a slightly easier time getting to their homes in the neighborhoods that lie very high up on hills. The people of Valparaíso are also rebuilding and fixing old furniculares so that they can better transport the people from the lower parts of the city to the more raised areas and neighborhoods.
