The Environment in Slovenia

Introduction:

The environment changes drastically from one country to another, and people must be specially equipped to survive and live in their specific conditions. Therefore, the environment of a country can tell you a lot about the people living there.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Slovenia is a unique country in that its environment differs greatly depending on the part of the country that you are in. Slovenia is a very small country, about the size of New Jersey, but it encompasses land from the seashore of the Adriatic coast of the Mediterranean Sea to the high altitudes of the Julian Alps. This gives the country a unique diversity of landscapes where it is possible to spend the morning on the beach near palm trees and vineyards and then drive an hour or two north and spend the afternoon surrounded by pine trees and snow-capped mountaintops. Further, Slovenia contains the Karst plateau, which is a region near the coast composed of primarily limestone rock that hosts many intricate cave systems where unique animal species such as the cave olm can be found. On the surface, nearly 60% of Slovenia is covered in forest, making it the third most forested country in the European Union. Therefore, Slovenia is very connected to its forests, which play a large role in its economy and tourism.
