The language barrier has also sometimes made it feel difficult or intimidating to make friends, but I try my best to be friendly and have met many lovely people who are kind to me, too.
Adjusting to a new routine and lifestyle has introduced me to many things that I hope to incorporate into my life upon my return to the U.S. I love eating gallo pinto (Costa Rican rice and beans) for breakfast, always greeting my friends with a hug, and having access to fresh fruit whenever I want it. Living with a host family has been a very positive experience, as well. My time here in Costa Rica has also led me to reflect more deeply on my life back home. It's fascinating to hear how local Ticos think about U.S. politics, and to observe the parallels between some political issues that face both countries. I feel that I better understand the global impact of the actions of the U.S., including how they can affect the daily lives of people in other countries.
I am grateful for the support of the Gilman Scholarship, as well as that of my home university, the University of Kansas. This experience would not have been possible without the guidance and generosity of these entities. I highly encourage that you all consider studying abroad in the future, as it is truly an amazing and growth-inspiring experience!
