Living in Antique has grown my appreciation for the world and the many amazing people and cultures that fill it.
If you want to experience the world by living abroad, I hope you will consider being a Peace Corps volunteer like me! The U.S. Peace Corps is a program funded by the U.S. government that trains and deploys volunteers to communities around the world, at the invitation of 60+ participating countries. Volunteers live and work alongside their neighbors for two years. I am an environmental volunteer, but volunteers also help their host communities meet their needs in areas such as agriculture, economic development, education and health. Whether you would like to live and work in Asia, Africa or South America in the future, the Peace Corps has a place for you!
The Peace Corps was founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy with a mission to “promote world peace and friendship.” This mission is a large reason I decided to become a volunteer. Making close friendships with my Filipino neighbors and coworkers has helped me to grow as a global citizen. I have learned firsthand about Southeast Asian culture, and I have had opportunities to represent my own country, too. For many Filipino people, I am the first American they have met! I have loved getting to answer their questions about living in the U.S. and representing American values of independence, kindness, equality and diversity. Expanding my own and others’ intercultural understanding is a huge reason I love spending time abroad.
You can experience the world without having to go far from home, too!
