In my free time, I absolutely love being outside, breathing fresh air and doing fun activities such as hiking or lying out on a green lawn with my friends. I love to be active and visit new places! So far, I have gotten to hike one volcano here in Guatemala. Santa María is located in a city near where I live called Xela, and I hiked it with four friends. We woke up super early, at 3:30 a.m., so that we could start hiking by 4:30 a.m.! I was exhausted afterwards, but the view was so worth it. It is my goal to hike as many volcanoes as possible during my two years here in Guatemala. I also love trying new foods, listening to music and playing cards.
My grandparents met in the Peace Corps in Columbia in the 1960's, and their story helped inspire me to apply to the Peace Corps, too. Peace Corps is a United States Government Organization that sends American volunteers around the world to countries that have requested trained Americans to help fulfill needs for different projects. This is one of the things I love most about Peace Corps: as volunteers, we are never coming in with a master plan of what needs to be done. Rather, our role is to really get to know and understand our communities and support them in meeting whatever priorities and needs they recognize in their community, which they know best. The other main goal of Peace Corps is to create space for a cultural exchange to foster a better understanding of people from other countries among Americans and to foster a better understanding of Americans among people from other countries.
