Moon Jellyfish in Malta

However, in recent years, an increasing number of moon jellyfish (and other types of jellyfish) have been found in Maltese waters. This is a result of rising water temperatures due to climate change.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Moon jellyfish eat different types of plankton and mollusks to survive. They collect their prey with their tentacles, and bring it closer to their body to digest it. The jelly-fish are largely dependent on the current of the water in order to swim because of their limited capacity for motion. They can only swim by expanding and contracting their umbrella-shaped bodies.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

The moon jellyfish has several different predators: leatherback sea turtles, ocean sunfish, larger types of jellyfish and sea birds. However, the jelly-fish have toxins in their tentacles to protect them from their predators. Thankfully, they are not an endangered species!
